Artist Statement
I don't remember being particularly passionate about making art as a child, although I always took art courses, like I took dance lessons, and piano lessons, and golf lessons.
The first turning point for me was the four art history courses that I took as electives my junior year of college. I was so ravenous to learn more and do more that I changed my major to art. My professional turning point was the summer (1974) that I spent at The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. I studied with so many incredible students and professional artists. I left with my lifetime commitment. My paintings have always been thematic. Although I was taught by contemporary, exhibiting painters to paint in a contemporary language, MY muses have always been the Renaissance, 19th century French painting and the 1970's to present Realism. I love to work in series and believe that I become more secure and creative within representational, psychological and compositional boundaries that I have created. I continue to learn and to search for knowledge and refinement in my technique. I take classes from other artists. I read, read, read. I go to contemporary and historical museums. I see or hear something every day that influences my paintings. (media about the artist) |
