Issues and Incidents in Childhood About 8 years ago I found a box of high contrast slides of me, between the ages of 2 and 12, taken by my Mother. Actually the slides were images of the exquisitely designed and crafted dresses that she had made for me her art. I knew immediately that these slides would become my art in some form, but 8 years ago I was not ready for them. In the summer of 2007, when I decided to take a break from my female Saints' series, I retrieved the slides from a drawer in my studio. Each slide was a memory, not just of the dress, but of an event that "went with" the dress a trip, a party, a quarrel, a best friend, something that my Daddy said, or the state of my "only child syndrome". My paintings in this series have expanded beyond the dresses and images of me and include other children and incidents other than mine. The paintings are not meant to be portraits of me or of the other children but are meant to represent any child in that particular situation or condition. I continue to explore the multiple levels of growing up both physical and emotional. Back to Portfolio |
